They are so precious

Occasionally my dog seems to register “that’s an unfriendly person.” I don’t see it but I trust him. I’d bet they can read our smile without even looking up - maybe by body language or smell.

So true! You cannot see them without smiling. My mum says the exact same thing, no matter how rough a day she's had seeing Nyx instantly lifts her mood. They are just magic, they can hit the happiness button in us without even trying.

Hmm fascinating! Made me realise that I only ever smile at dogs that freely, even ones I've never met. The humans, I usually walk straight past, sometimes even those I do know.

And that one little exchange lights up the day, at least for a moment.

Oh absolutely! Any human encounters usually leave much to be desired 😝

Dogs should be able to vote.

Beautiful article! Thank you! It's really common for me to smile at the dogs I meet on walks. I love it when they respond. If they don't, I don't get upset as I know they have their higher loyalty to their owners or they've smelt or seen something interesting they want to inspect...

I smile at dogs and horses, not babies

My dog uses his eyes very much the same way Gromit does on the Wallace and Gromit films.

Those “guilty look from a dog caught in the act” videos you mention are just another form of animal abuse for clicks. They make me want to find the owners and give them a good slap up the head.
